Bringing a new baby home is a season unlike any other—tender, exhausting, deeply meaningful, and gone before you’re ready. When you begin searching for a newborn photographer in Colorado Springs, the options can feel overwhelming. Styles vary, approaches differ, and in those early weeks, decision-making isn’t always easy.
This guide will help you focus on what matters most when choosing newborn photos in Colorado Springs—so you can find a photographer who supports your family with calm, clarity, and intention.
1. Choose a Style That Feels Like Your Family
One of the first things you’ll notice while searching for a newborn photographer is how different each portfolio looks. Some photographers focus on posed studio portraits, while others take a more lifestyle or documentary approach.
Ask yourself:
Do I want highly styled images with lots of props, or photos that reflect our real life?
Lifestyle and documentary newborn photography often takes place in the home and focuses on connection rather than perfection. These sessions typically feel calmer and more flexible—especially helpful in the first weeks postpartum.
My work sits between lifestyle and documentary. I don’t choreograph scenes, but I offer gentle guidance so your images feel cohesive while staying natural and true to your family.
2. Consider Where You Feel Most Comfortable
Newborn sessions can take place in studios or in your home. There is no right or wrong choice, but many families find that in-home newborn photography reduces stress significantly.
Benefits of in-home sessions:
• No packing or rushing
• Feeding and soothing can happen naturally
• Familiar environment helps
3. Ask About Session Pace
The early postpartum period is not a time for tight timelines or performance expectations.
When researching photographers, ask:
- Do they allow time for feeding or soothing?
- Is the experience calm and unhurried?
- Do I need to time it so baby is asleep?
My sessions are intentionally baby-led. I limit how many families I photograph each month so I can move slowly, create space for pauses, and respond to what your baby needs in the moment. I've found the images taken during a "break" (such as to feed) actually become the favorite memories.
Many photographers want baby to be asleep for the session. While that does make things easier, I also love to capture EYES, so I don't ask you to time baby's nap around the session at all. We take things as they come and my sessions are typically long enough that we can easily capture both awake and nap time, on the baby's schedule.
4. Pay Attention to Editing Style
Editing plays a major role in how timeless your photos will feel years from now.
Look for:
• natural skin tones
• balanced contrast
• minimal distractions
• consistency across galleries
Trendy filters can date images quickly, while natural tones tend to preserve emotional authenticity.
My editing approach focuses on muted realism—softening distractions, embracing natural light, and using a thoughtful blend of color and black and white so connection remains the center of each image. The muted approach to realistic color also allows me to focus the attention to be real on the thing you actually want to remember (baby) and reduce the focus on the neon diaper box in the corner (Again, remember your home doesn't need to be perfect - good editing can hide a lot).
5. Ask About Wardrobe and Preparation Support
One overlooked part of newborn photography is how much preparation can impact stress levels. Some photographers offer wardrobe guidance or access to curated pieces, which can make planning easier.
For newborn sessions, I do not offer posed, tightly wrapped sessions with a lot of props. I do offer a small collection of simple, neutral baby outfits just in case you don't already have a special outfit picked. My outfits a basic ribbed zip ups in cream, light pink, and light blue with openings for hands and feet so we can get those detailed shots.
Comfort always comes first—both for you and baby. I want you to wear what you enjoy and feels like you, but I'm happy to give tips on helping everyone co-ordinate (which is better than perfectly matching) in a simple way so that the photos are timeless but you don't need to buy anything new or stress about it.
6. Choose Someone You Trust in Your Space
Inviting someone into your home during early motherhood is deeply personal. Technical skill matters, but emotional presence matters more.
The right photographer will:
• move quietly and respectfully
• honor your family’s rhythms
• protect your privacy
• create a sense of ease
As a mother of two myself, I understand how vulnerable these early days can feel. My goal is not only to create meaningful images but to ensure the experience itself feels supportive and unhurried. I encourage you to take moments to truly remember the smell of baby, linger on his little toes, and stop posing.
Final Thoughts
There is no single “best” newborn photographer—only the one who aligns with your family’s values, pace, and comfort.
When you find someone whose work feels honest, whose presence feels calming, and whose approach respects your season, the decision becomes clear.
